“Especially through my fraternity, a lot of my friendships are built through serving my campus, community, country, and world.” –Sarah Doughty

Sarah is Sam’s roommate, and they both moved in on the Friday of move-in week.  That first weekend, I almost never saw her because she was off with her fraternity brothers, which became a trend that continued throughout much of the first semester.  However, as the semester wound down, she began spending more time with us, and we got more acquainted.  This semester has allowed us to get to know each other so much better, and we are now pretty close friends.  Over Spring Break, Sarah, Ben, and I went on the Honors Learning Community trip to Chicago, and the three of us got to explore the Windy City together.  For almost three days, we spent every moment with each other, and got to share some incredible experiences.  My favorite moment with Sarah was her utter fascination when we went to the Skydeck at Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) and got to stand 1,353 feet above the ground, supported by nothing but a glass box.  Her pure wonder and innocence at times reminds me to slow things down and remember to have fun.  She doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her, and often tries to make jokes that don’t come out quite right, but it’s adorable (in a non-condescending way) how hard she tries.  She is also so down-to-earth and gets along with everyone – I have never seen her get into a disagreement with any of our suitemates.  Honestly, the only thing she does that annoys me is she always forgets to check-in on our whiteboard when she comes home (which is hardly a complaint).  She is easy-going and is one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met.  She always goes out of her way to help and serve others, and finds meaning in her life by doing just that.  Her fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, is a co-ed service fraternity, so she is always out serving the community and it is so encouraging that she feels such a great need to help others.  Sarah’s dedication to service and helping others influences the decisions I make in that I am constantly wondering what I could be doing to help others and share the love like she does.  I strive to be as dedicated, kind, and selfless as she is.
